Entitled "Coming and Going," this statue depicts a dying mother who has given birth to a child, symbolizing life and death, or the continuous ebb and flow of the creative, cosmic continuum. The Swiss artist, Erwin Winterhalder, creator of the famous "End of the Trail," exhibited at the 1915 Pan-Pacific Exposition, sculpted this piece.

Plan Your Visit: Schools

School Expeditions

A trip to our museum is a wonderful way for students to experience the ancient cultures they will be learning about throughout the school year.

We offer School Expeditions designed to meet the standards set by the California State Frameworks for History-Social Science geared for the sixth grade curriculum.

Our Expeditions provide preparatory materials with a general overview of Egyptian history and the Museum collection, and materials for the students to prepare for their exploration of the Museum, as well as special resources for School Groups. Students pinpoint Egypt's geographic location. They discover the crucial importance of the Nile River as a catalyst for Egyptian civilization. Students will learn about the mummification process, tour a replica rock-cut tomb, explore the mysteries of the hieroglyphs, learn about the kings and queens, and meet the gods and goddesses of ancient Egypt.
